Naraka Chaturdashi 2025

   Srimathe ramanujaya namaha

On the auspicious occasion of Kārthikai month according to lunar calendar and Aippasi month according to solar calendar falls Naraka Chaturdashi.

A day celebrated to remember the divine past times played by  SrI Krishna . One such profound events unfold the slaying of demon Narakasura, an episode that resonates with timeless lessons of righteousness and redemption.

The Legend of Narakasura(Bhaumasura)

Narakasura, born to the Earth goddess Bhudevi and the Varaha Perumal  succumbed to arrogance and tyranny, imprisoning 16,100 women and oppressing the gods. His reign of terror led to widespread suffering, prompting the gods to seek intervention.

Lord Krishna, accompanied by his consort Satyabhama, confronted Narakasura. In the ensuing battle, Krishna slew the demon, liberating the captives and restoring cosmic order. Before his death, Narakasura requested that his demise be celebrated with lights, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and ignorance. Thus, Naraka Chaturdashi, also known as Chhoti Diwali  in North was born—a day to honor the victory of light over darkness.

Just as Krishna vanquished the external demon, we are reminded to conquer their internal demons—such as pride, anger, and ignorance. This day encourages self-reflection, urging devotees to cleanse their hearts and minds, paving the way for spiritual enlightenment.

On Naraka Chaturdashi, devotees wake before dawn to perform an oil bath (Abhyanga Snan/ Ganga Snanam), symbolizing the removal of impurities. Homes are cleaned and illuminated with lamps, signifying the triumph of light over darkness. Special prayers and rituals are conducted, invoking blessings for prosperity and well-being.

Conclusion

The story of Narakasura is not just to read and forget but realize the demon inside us and to vanquish it . To enroute our life into dharmic path under the guidance of SrI Krishna.
