ISKCON Perspective: Dāmodara Month
In the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, Kārthikai is celebrated as Dāmodara Māsam, dedicated to Śrī Rādhā-Dāmodara.
This month is completely dedicated to Radharani.
Devotees offer ghee lamps daily while reciting the Dāmodarāṣṭakam, remembering the sweet pastime of Lord Kṛṣṇa bound by Mother Yaśodā’s love.
Devotee listen to the pastimes of Damodara leela.
They emphasis is on Nāma Sankirtana, Tulasi pūjā, fasting, and charity.
Devotional service performed during this month is considered immensely meritorious.
Śrī Vaiṣṇava Perspective:
In the Śrī Vaiṣṇava Sampradāya, Kārthikai is the most revered month after Margazhi.
Kaisika Ekādaśī that comes under vallarpirai is the sole Ekādaśī in this month, glorified for the story of Nampāduvān relieving the Brahma Rākṣasa. It teaches that bhakti transcends varṇa, āśrama, and social status.
Kārthikai Pournami (Dīpotsavam) marks the lighting of countless lamps and the commencement of Anadhyayana Kālam, a period of reflection before resuming scripture recitation.
The month also celebrates the Tirunakṣatrams of Thirumangai Āzhvār, NampiLLai, Emperumānār, and Paravastu Pattar PiRān Jīyar, inspiring devotees to live with devotion and surrender.
During the sacred glow of Kārthikai Māsam, devotees welcome Dhanteras, illuminating homes and hearts alike, and continuing the month-long celebration of devotion, lamps, and divine grace.
“Following the sacred glow of Kārthikai Māsam, devotees welcome >Dhanteras — Auspicious Beginning of DeepavaliDhanteras — the auspicious beginning of Deepavali, illuminating homes and hearts alike.”
